Growing green bricks
Ginger Krieg Dosier, Biomason President & CEO
Our mission is to lead the transition to planet-friendly construction.
- Biomason creates biocement without carbon emissions by using natural microorganisms, similar to how coral reefs are formed.
- Concrete is the second-most consumed substance on the planet after water1 and it accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions due to the firing of materials such as limestone2 and the calcination process.
- Formerly an architect, Ginger discovered that most supposedly sustainable products were only marginally better and was inspired to find a solution. She set up a lab in her spare room and started her quest to 'grow a concrete brick', finally succeeding and quitting her professorship to start Biomason in 2012.
- Biomason's goal is for its biocement to reduce 25% of carbon emissions from the concrete industry by 2030.
- Ginger has spoken at high-profile events including WWF TedX in Abu Dhabi3 while Biomason has won various awards, most notably the PostCode Lottery Green Challenge4, for which Sir Richard Branson served as a judge.
