Will renewable tech save the world? Ask Paul Krugman
A follow-up conversation with Paul Krugman on climate change, rapid advancement in clean energy and a retreat in globalization after he spoke at the UBS Alternative Investments Conference in May.
A lot has changed in the world since last year’s United Nations climate change conference, or COP (Conference of the Parties), where world leaders came together to formulate action plans against global warming. This year’s meeting, COP27, followed months of heat waves and climate-related disasters and took place in the middle of energy price surges and shortages set off by the war in Ukraine, and not to mention, a downturn in the global economy. These developments have made it hard for countries to transition away from fossil fuels—and threatened the commitment made in 2015 to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% in 2030 and reach net zero emissions by 2050.
With COP27 in the backdrop, we sat down to talk with Paul Krugman, a world renowned economist and winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. As a follow-up to the UBS Alternative Investments Conference in May that covered sustainable investing opportunities, where Paul Krugman was a keynote speaker, our exchange this time is centered around the impact of climate change and energy transition on countries, businesses and investments. He shared his thoughts on the rapid advancement in renewable energy technologies alongside the inevitable confrontations arising from climate policy. Here is a summary of the conversation.
