Recycling: From the Ground Up

Watch how carpet from the show floor at Art Basel was given a new lease of life

To limit waste, preserve natural materials and reduce the carbon footprint, there are now many innovative ways we can re-use and recycle the materials around us – some as unexpected as carpet.

“Every year 100 million square metres of carpet are installed… with a life span of only one to ten days” says Benedict Lobel of Beaulieu International Group, with most of these show carpets ending up in landfill. ‘This is not sustainable. This is not responsible” she adds.

At the UBS Art Studio in Art Basel in Basel 2022, the former Art Basel show carpet was turned into a filament, which was then used to 3D print bird-sculptures named 'L’Oiseau' and designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Vitra. The birds in turn could be won by the public in a lucky draw.
