Jeffrey Gibson, a member of the Choctaw and Cherokee Nations who has lived in the United States, Korea, Germany, and England, is known for his multidisciplinary practice. His work incorporates themes and materials associated with his Native American heritage, modern geometric abstraction, and punk rock. He combines beads and animal hides with acrylic and spray paint in electric colors, creating totemic objects in the form of Everlast punching bags and monumental ceremonial garments adorned with bits of text, weavings, and fringe.
Gibson often borrows his titles from music and popular culture. In ‘YOU HAVE SET MY SOUL ON FIRE’ (2019), the words forming the title, partially hidden within abstract patterning resembling an Op art tapestry, can be found in the lyrics of multiple songs from the 1950s to the present.
