Roy Lichtenstein

'Crying Girl,’ 1963

Roy Lichtenstein Artwork

Bringing the graphic devices of comic strips into fine art became Roy Lichtenstein’s trademark. ‘Crying Girl’, 1963, is a rare, early ink on paper drawing, which was made as a sketch for later use. It was created just a year after the prominent Leo Castelli Gallery exhibited Lichtenstein’s first one-man show, presenting his first Pop artworks. ‘Crying Girl’ is a typical example of his style. It depicts a girl with a dramatic and tearful expression on her face, biting her fingers. The bold black outlines on plain white ground give maximum impact to the expressive close-up. Striking in his pictorial comment, Lichtenstein appeals to the trivialized emotions as they appear in a variety of everyday imagery.
