The commodity crunch point

Exploring the commodity market: outlook and opportunities.

Commodity market transition: how to seize opportunities?

Commodities are the building blocks of our society. According to industry estimates, about USD 10trn worth of commodities are produced and consumed every year, which makes the sector the biggest and arguably the most important sector worldwide.

The commodity market is exposed to continuous and rapid changes. At current rates, our consumption of commodities is unsustainable. Commodity markets must show greater urgency in tackling the challenges posed by climate change, major technological advances, shifts in consumer preferences, and the rise of more sustainable commodity supply sources (from renewable energy to plant-based proteins). Understanding the key challenges faced by commodity markets, and policy responses of commodity producing countries in handling changes they cause in the commodity markets is of utmost importance for entrepreneurs and investors alike.

Overview and outlook of the commodity market

Commodities play a pivotal role in our day-to-day lives. In agriculture, wheat, soybeans, cattle and the like help fulfil our basic nutritional needs, while oil, gas and coal support our energy requirements.

Energy

Amid slower energy demand growth, fossil fuel producers are facing rising competition from renewables. By 2040 the displaced demand for fossil fuels could exceed current US oil demand of nearly 21 million barrels per day.

Metals

Metals

Bulk commodity and metal producers face mounting pressure from slowing demand growth, regional shifts in consumption, and growing calls to address social and environmental concerns. This poses major challenges for the mining industry.

Agriculture

Agriculture

Agriculture already accounts for most of our water consumption and a high percentage of our land use, as well as the bulk of human-generated greenhouse gases. With resources dwindling, the issue of how to sustain a growing, urbanized population without further harming biodiversity and the ecosystem is intensifying.

The transformation of commodity markets is set to test the economic models of commodity-producing countries. It will expose their structural weaknesses, forcing governments to search for new opportunities. Many commodity-producing countries need to prepare their economies for the shift from fossil fuels to renewables and the effects of climate change. Equally, many corporations may no longer be able to operate on a business-as-usual basis, as they grapple with the consequences of changing commodity landscape. Investors and entrepreneurs will also need to rethink their strategies to benefit from the numerous opportunities and manage emerging risks.
