What you’ll need:

  • A clean, empty 1.5 liter PET bottle
  • A serrated kitchen knife
  • A waterproof pen
  • Stones
  • Adhesive tape
  • A measuring jug
  • Water

How to do it:

1. Cut off the upper quarter of the PET bottle with a serrated knife. Ask an adult for help.

2. Place a couple of stones in the bottle to avoid the wind blowing it over.

3. Measure 100 ml of water and pour it into the PET bottle.

4. Mark the 100 ml point with a line. Repeat this until you reach the top.

5. Then pour the water back out.

6. Place the top part of the PET bottle upside down as a funnel in the PET bottle and attach it with adhesive tape.

7. Set up your rain station outdoors and measure rainfall. Use the “rain diary(PDF, 373 KB)” template to document the rain regularly. Learn more about the water cycle using the “water cycle” template.
