Claudio Saputelli on energy-efficient renovations
If Swiss housing stock is to be truly climate-neutral by 2050, more than 38,000 buildings will need to be renovated every year. There is still a lot to do to achieve this goal, emphasizes Claudio Saputelli, Head CIO Real Estate at UBS.
Buildings in Switzerland are responsible for around 40 percent of total energy consumption, most of which is for heating. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 56 percent of all existing residential buildings are still heated with fossil fuels like oil or gas and eight percent with electricity. The potential is there to reduce CO₂ emissions and achieve the ambitious goal of net-zero emissions for Swiss building stock by 2050. This requires the energy-efficient renovation of houses. However, with increasing progress in the energy transition, it is becoming more and more difficult to maintain the necessary pace of renovation, according to the recently published study “UBS Real Estate Focus 2024”. In the following interview, Claudio Saputelli, Head CIO Real Estate at UBS, explains why there is a need to act and how the current situation should be assessed.
