'Covid is a ticking time bomb'
Covid-19 response series: Kennedy Odede
The coronavirus pandemic is affecting the entire world's health systems, industries and economies, including the work of our Global Visionaries; however, as you might expect from such innovative individuals, many are responding in remarkable ways.
In this web call, Kennedy Odede told us how his non-profit SHOFCO was not a disaster response organisation but had a responsibility to step in as it was already present in the community.
He explained that social distancing was not possible in slums where some 50 families shared one toilet, so a coronavirus outbreak had the potential to be a major humanitarian crisis.
To prevent this, SHOFCO had taken measures including producing and distributing soap and hand sanitizer, along with creating handwashing stations and disseminating information.
Kennedy felt the West had been slow to react, so his one hope was that Africa could take action sooner and that "this might save us".
