Permanently removing carbon dioxide from the air
Christoph Gebald & Jan Wurzbacher, Co-founders of Climeworks
- Climeworks empowers people to reverse climate change by permanently removing carbon dioxide from the air via direct air capture.
- The latest report by the IPCC reconfirms that in addition to drastic emissions reductions, carbon removal solutions need to be deployed at scale to remove historic and residual CO₂ emissions to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, and limit global warming to 1.5°C.
- One of two things happens to Climeworks’ air-captured carbon dioxide: either it is returned to earth, stored safely and permanently away for thousands of years, or it is upcycled into climate-friendly products such as carbon-neutral fuels and materials.
- Climeworks’ machines have a high CO2 efficiency (> 90%) and they can precisely measure how much CO2 is removed. Due to the modular design and low land footprint of the machines, the technology is highly scalable.
- Climeworks is the most advanced market player in technological carbon dioxide removal and offers its service to both businesses and individuals alike. Companies like Microsoft, Stripe, Swiss Re and BCG, as well as more than 14’000 individuals rely on Climeworks to permanently remove a part of their emissions.
- In September 2021, Climeworks launched the world’s largest direct air capture and storage plant, Orca, located in Iceland. Orca is the backbone for pioneering CO2 removal agreements and creates the demand that is necessary to build up this industry. It is also the basis for Climeworks’ technology scale-up to gigaton capacity by 2050, which has been accelerated by an equity round of CHF 600 million in 2022.
- Founded by engineers Christoph Gebald and Jan Wurzbacher, Climeworks strives to inspire 1 billion people to act now and remove carbon dioxide from the air.
