Not Vital
(Switzerland, *1948)
Swiss artist Not Vital grew up in the Engadin Alpine region of southeast Switzerland in a Romansh speaking family. Vital’s interest in art stems from his encounter with the art historian Max Huggler, who settled in the region. In addition to his print making and drawing, he is known for his witty sculptures. In 1974, Vital moved to New York, where he came into close contact with seminal artists such as Willem de Kooning, Julian Schnabel and Jean-Michel Basquiat. During this time his work was heavily influenced by the multicultural melting pot that characterises New York. While especially engaged with Abstract Expressionism, he still maintained elements from his home environment and local traditions. Beyond his creative accomplishments, Vital believes in artistic responsibility to society. He built clay buildings, including an elementary school in Niger, which can be understood as social sculpture. In 2003 he set up the Fundaziun Not Vital at castle Tarasp with the aim of both preserving the culture of the Engadin region and promoting cultural exchange.
