Pillar 3a

Pillar 3a is the private pension plan designed to supplement the pillar 1 (OASI) state pension and pillar 2 (BVG) occupational pension. As a private individual, you can pay into a retirement savings account or a pension fund  to boost your retirement savings.

The amount you can pay into pillar 3a is limited by law. In 2024, the maximum you can contribute to pillar 3a is CHF 7,056 for employees with a pension fund and up to CHF 35,280 for self-employed individuals without a pension fund.

You can deduct your pillar 3 deposits from your taxable income. This reduces your taxable income and lowers your tax burden. Assuming an annual income of CHF 85,000, you save on average up to CHF 2,000 per year in taxes, depending on your canton of residence.

Good to know: Income from pillar 3a pension funds is tax-free.

Not at present. However, due to a change in the law, it will be possible in the near future to make extra payments and close any shortfall in your pension. It is not yet clear when this change in the law will come into force.
