A placeholder text can be displayed within each field

A user can get access to a description via an "?"-icon

Error-messages are displayed under the field

How it works

  • Form components can be accompanied by assistive text – either as a short placeholder text or a description.
  • The placeholder text can provide in-line-assistance. It appears when a user activates a field.
  • Each form element can have an info-icon that opens a description.
  • Constraints and error-messages can be defined for specific form fields
  • Each field shows the successful infilling.
  • Otherwise an error message appears nearby, indicating the missing data.

How to use it

  • Use placeholder text and description when there is real need only.
  • Use placeholder text to provide quick hints
  • Use description to provide background information or additional explanation (e.g. legal reasons)

What to avoid

  • Minimize the use of the description.
  • Avoid the placeholder text being too long. It should fit in one line even in a narrow grid control.
