How it works

  • Our public website includes several tens of thousands of pages. This presents challenges to the navigation system.
  • We address these challenges by packaging information dedicated to distinct topics, audiences or divisions into sites. These sites are characterized by a navigation system that focuses only on this information package.
  • This way we can keep the navigation relatively lean and make it easier for users to explore the subject at hand.

How to use it

  • When creating new content consider if this new content should be integrated into an existing site, or if a new site would be more usable for our users.
  • Keep in mind that users need to find these different sites and on each new site need some orientation time to become familiar with the site.
  • The difference in subject matter between sites needs to be significant. Otherwise, information is bundled into a single site.

What to avoid

  • Avoid creating sites just because it is more convenient or causes less coordination and work.
  • Do not use sites and content excessively.
